Those awards are just like the participation ribbons the give kids these days. They don’t want the K car to feel bad for being the worst car to show up.

It’s been going on a lot longer than you think. Never underestimate Mopar guys.

IDK. Whenever I see a K car, I judge it.
And the owner.
Harshly.

80's were almost the death of the American midsize sedan.

All this hate for the Savior of Chrysler K-car? Tough crowd. These weren’t so bad considering the options from the other domestics at the time. And really, if you can keep one mint this long, that’s something. We had multiple versions of the k-car plateform through the years, they were decent, and in the snow, I’d take one over most new cars today. But just for the snow driving. Skinny ass tires and front wheel drive. I could go anywhere in our little k-car... just not quickly. They didn’t get much simpler to wrench on either. The body would rust out before anything major went wrong.

If you allow Falcons, Darts, and Chevy IIs to be judged, then this is the next gen of lowly people movers to show. Just bc no sexy RWD is no reason to think they served a different purpose

I worked at a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer in 88-89. They spun off so many cars from that platform it was nuts. My biggest gripe with the Aries/Reliant was they were just horrid little boxy turds. And the 85 Omni I had in college was a complete turd.

Had one of those as well at some point. The first caravans were on the k-car platform as well. Same weak as 2.2l and everything.

They are getting up there in years, when cars get old enough, even the ones that were fairly undesirable when new start attracting enthusiasts. See also Falcon, Dart, Valiant, Lark, Rambler, etc. - all those were birth control on wheels when they were brand new, and now, many are pampered show queens. The oldest Ks are getting near 40 years old, so they’re hitting that age.

I recall the dealer had a 5spd turbo Voyager. That was actually amusing to drive, but aside from that they were awful.

Amazing what a few decades will do for our collective memory. Every era has its rolling turds I suppose.

Consider basically every American attempt in the 1970s and early 1980s at an efficient, downsized platform before the K car?
Think things like Vegas and Citations.

Right. Mom had a Citation; it was a pos. Chevettes were pretty awful too iirc.
